Litotomi position is the most common delivery position in almost all countries around the world. Pregnant women were asked on her back with her legs hanging on a special support for maternity.

Advantages

Psychologically, the choice of birth position is common in ground water makes the mother feel more secure because that is the perception of labor’s position is like that. This position also makes physicians freely to help the delivery process because the birth canal facing forward. Doctors or midwives more easily measure the development of the opening so that labor can be predicted more accurately. When necessary, episiotomy (cutting up or cut the skin to widen the vaginal opening of the vagina) will be performed, the physician more flexibility to do it. Better cutting results, directed, and cuts can be minimized. Position the baby’s head was much easier to handle and directed.

Disadvantages

If this is a first time mother gave birth, the mother lay down position likely to push hard. However, the gravity of the body is under and parallel to the trouble to push the baby’s position. This position will also likely to lead to the perineum (area between the anus and vagina) stretch in such a way that makes it difficult to deliver the baby. This position makes the location of large vessels under the baby’s position and depressed by the mass of the baby. Moreover, if the location of the placenta is also under the baby, it would create pressure on the blood vessels become high and cause a slowing of blood circulation through the mother. Delivery of oxygen through the blood that flows from mother to fetus through the placenta was also relatively reduced.

All positions have advantages and disadvantages. If you are preparing to give birth you can choose one of them, with first consulted the doctor who will help the labor. Here are two options of give birth position (other than lying down):

1. Half Sit

This position requires that the mother was sitting with his back leaning against a pillow, knees bent and legs open toward the side.

Advantages: This position makes the mother feel comfortable. The axis of the birth canal that needs to be taken to get out is shorter. Supply of oxygen from mother to fetus take place optimally.

Disadvantages: This position can cause sore backs and complaints of fatigue, especially when a long delivery process.

2. Lateral (oblique)

This position requires that the mother lying on her side to the left or right. One of her feet is up while the other leg straight in the circumstances. Usually, it is done when the baby’s head position is not right yet. Normally cantle position the baby was in front of the birth canal, became abnormal when the position of the fontanel is behind or the side. Leaning to the left or right, depends on the position of the baby crown. If on the right, the mother was asked skewed to the right with the hope the baby will rotate. This position can also be used when the labor lasted longer and the mother was already exhausted with the other positions.

Advantages: behind the mother’s blood circulation is flowing smoothly. Delivery of oxygen in the blood of mother to fetus through the placenta is not affected. Because not too pressing, the process of opening took place slowly so that labor is relatively more comfortable.

Disadvantages: This position makes little difficulty, the doctor or midwife to help the delivery process. Baby’s head is held or directed more difficult. When you have to do an episiotomy, it becomes an even more difficult position.

Here are some of them:

1. Standing / Half squat.
Advantages: This position is in harmony with the earth’s gravity. Thus, the pushing force far more powerful mother. Indeed, in a standing position directly proportional to the birth canal land. As if the mother pressed the ground with his whole body strength. So that the readiness of all parties needed to help the birth, do not let the baby “sliding” too fast to injury. So that this does not happen, it is usually already set up a soft, sterile pads to keep baby’s head and body.

Disadvantages: Your doctor or midwife should be little difficulty when delivered through the opening of an episiotomy or to monitor developments.

2. Squat
Advantages: This position is advantageous because the gravitational influence of the body, the mother did not have much trouble pushing. Babies will get out through the birth canal by itself.

Disadvantages: If not prepared properly, the squat position is very likely to make the baby’s head injury, because a baby can “glide” quickly. So that this does not happen, it is usually already set up a soft, sterile pads to keep baby’s head and body. Your doctor or midwife was a bit difficult if an episiotomy should be delivered through the opening or to monitor developments.

3. Water Birth
Advantages: The main advantage of mothers giving birth in water is very relaxing, because of the relaxation of all muscles of the body, especially the muscles associated with childbirth. Becomes easier to push and do not feel pain like other birth process. Do not worry baby will be “sunk” once born, because for the content of any real live baby in the mother’s amniotic fluid.

Disadvantages: Risk of water ingested by the infant is very large, so this process requires the readiness of all parties, whether used equipment as well as obstetricians, nurses, or physicians who direct check on the child so born baby. When the process lasted too long, the mother may develop hypothermia or body temperature is too low.
