Slang Talk Is Contagious
July 7, 2010
Have you ever found a friend who was assigned for several months outside of town, and when returned found a different accent? Changes dialect, or accent, was very reasonable and often difficult to prevent. As reported by Diane Mapes of MSNBC, language experts say that we have often followed the tone after interacting with others. “Many of us have accidentally carried the accent of others,” he wrote. One time, Oprah Winfrey in her show had even imitated the Southern accent spoken by the guest show. Someone apparently offended to hear this, and trying to find archive tapes again the event. Seen in the video, apparently Oprah did it all the time. “When she (Oprah) speaks with his guest, he would mimic the accent back on them,” said Arika Okrent, a linguist from Philadelphia, who is also the author of In the Land of invented Languages. According to him, it’s a natural human trait, and is a natural way for someone to empathize with those around them. A reader of the article even says that as a customer service staff, the company he works subtly encourage employees to follow the tone of voice and speaking rate level subscribers. The Company believes that the way it can help customers to feel more comfortable, so that the customer and the company are in the same level. “I think slowly but sure we imitate their accents,” the reader said. How about you? Have you ever brought someone accent, intentionally or not?
